What does ESE mean?

eBay Standard Envelope.

The short answer

A tracked envelope, for eBay sales only

ESE stands for eBay Standard Envelope. It is a letter-sized envelope with a tracked label bought through eBay, for cards that sell for $20 or less. It costs about the same as a stamp and still gives the buyer a tracking number.

You'll see it in listings as the shipping option, and in card groups as the reason a PWE is no longer worth the risk on eBay: for about the price of a stamp, the sale has tracking.

You can only buy it on an eBay order, with eBay Labels. It is not for trades or sales anywhere else.

What it costs

By weight, up to 3 oz

eBay's rates, from its help page on October 15, 2026:

  • 1 oz: $0.82
  • 2 oz: $1.11
  • 3 oz: $1.40. Buy the 3 oz label for a card in a Card Saver or top loader: one weighed light may come back to you.

The rules

What can go in one

  • $20 or less. The item's selling price, before tax. Over that, ship it another way.
  • Up to 24 raw cards, or up to 2 in top loaders. No graded cards.
  • Letter size. From 3.5 x 5 to 6.125 x 11.5 inches, under 3 oz, under 1/4 inch thick all over, and not rigid. No bubble mailers, plastic, clasps or strings.
  • Drop it anywhere USPS takes mail. A blue box or your mailbox is fine: it doesn't need a scan at the counter.
  • Get it wrong and it comes back, or the buyer pays postage due. eBay has a template to check the envelope against.

Tracking and protection

What the tracking shows, and what it covers

  • The tracking is the sorting machines'. The envelope is scanned as it goes through USPS's letter machines, not at a counter or a door, so it can skip a step or stop at "In transit". A stiff, lumpy envelope is the one that gets missed.
  • It still counts on eBay. The tracking number goes on the order by itself, and the buyer sees it in their purchase history.
  • Loss and damage are covered: up to the sale price, $20 for one item and up to $50 for an order of several, through eBay's shipping protection. A claim can be filed after a waiting period, and within 90 days of the label.
  • Late isn't covered. eBay doesn't promise a delivery time for it.

Packing it

How to ship a card has what goes in the envelope: what we send under $20 goes in an ESE. PWE and BMWT are the other two ways. The envelopes and team bags we use are in Supplies.
